Safety shoes are a necessity in work environments to protect workers from various mishaps which include electrical hazards, falling objects, trips, slips or falls and so on. Most of the injuries that occur due to these mishaps could be avoided with the use of safety shoes and personal protective equipment. There are different types of safety shoes that are designed for use in different work environments with special features that protect workers from an accident of a particular nature. Here are the different types of safety shoes that are worn in different industries.
Safety-toed shoes:
Safety-toed shoes are a common type of footwear worn by workers whose job is to carry heavy objects or who work in facilities where there is a potential hazard of objects falling on them and crushing their shoes. Safety-toed shoes are manufactured with a protective covering around the toe area of the shoe. The protective covering is usually made with steel and offers a protective covering over the toe area thereby making the shoe crush resistant.
There are two types of safety-toed shoes namely: composite toe boots and steel-toed boots. The safety caps on composite-toed boots are manufactured with non-metallic materials and weigh about 30% lesser than steel–toed boots. Composite-toed boots are ideal for workers who deal with electricity, electronics, and security work environments where there is a danger of electrocution. Steel-toed boots, on the other hand, are used by workers who work in environments where there is a chance of heavy objects falling or rolling.
Electric Hazard Shoes:
Electric hazard shoes are produced with a sole that prevents a worker from being electrocuted when he/she comes into contact with high voltage circuits and electricity. The sole in an electric hazard shoe restricts the flow of electricity from the circuit to the worker. This type of safety footwear is used by employees who work with high voltage machines, wiring, circuits, and electricity.
Steel Insole Shoes:
Steel insole shoes are specifically designed for truck drivers or employees who work with pedals. Since these workers move their feet often, to work the pedals while driving, there is a possibility of joint and bone damage. Steel insole shoes help workers to keep their feet stable and therefore avoid any damage that might occur to their joints or bones.
Metatarsal Shoes:
These shoes are mainly used by construction workers or workers who are employed to carry heavy objects. It protects the workers from “drop hazards”. In other words, these shoes prevent injuries if the worker drops an object that they are carrying on their feet. Accidents in the nature of drop hazards are common and metatarsal shoes are an ideal piece of safety gear to prevent injury during such mishaps.
Metal Instep Footwear:
Workers in factories that manufacture machinery or glass objects are prone to injury by stepping on sharp objects. Metal instep shoes protect the worker by preventing any sharp object from penetrating to the feet of the employee.
Rubber Boots:
Rubber boots are worn by workers who deal with corrosive substances, chemicals or pesticides. It is also a good anti-slip footwear.
Welding Leggings:
As the name suggests welding leggings are worn by welders to protect themselves from welding sparks and molten metal that might splash causing burns.
All types of safety shoes are manufactured to keep the employee safe and also to keep them comfortable so carry out their tasks. Safety shoes can prevent injury in the event of a mishap and are manufactured according to certain international standards.
