Oilfields are crucial to our existence, not really, but products and byproducts of the oilfield industry help make our lives easier and better. Imagine a world without the petroleum products and by-products. That would mean that we would not have the ingredients used in the production of shampoos, plastics, ropes, umbrellas, paint, lipstick, candles, lotions, surfboards, cameras and so much more.
Oilfields are regions that have an abundance of oil wells, where petroleum is extracted from below the ground. Since these reservoirs extend over large areas, multiple oil wells are set up, sometimes several dozens, to cover as much of the resources as possible. Oil fields require proper logistics and a large amount of oilfield equipment from transportation to drilling equipment for its day to day operations.
There are various types of Equipment used in oilfields, the most common of them being trucks, drilling equipment, pipes, valves, pressure gauges, controls, levers, pumps, generators and other fire and safety equipment. Though Oil Field Equipment, in a general sense, covers a wide range of Equipment, in this post we’re only going to look at a few of the most common types of oil field equipment.
Oil Field Trucks
Oil Field trucks are of many types, with varying features that are ideal for different standard and special operations. Trucks play an important role in the day-to-day functioning of an oilfield and in the extraction of oil. Some of the most common types of heavy trucks used in oil fields include winch trucks, vacuum trucks, and swab rigs.
Winch Trucks use winches or power spools wound with a cable to lift and move heavy objects. The winches used can differ from small winches mounted onto the front of small vehicles to huge heavy equipment with high load-bearing capacities.
Vacuum Trucks are generally used to transport liquids, semi-solids and sludge, which are stored in large tanks mounted on the back of the truck. These trucks use heavy duty vacuum to remove substances loose enough to be pumped. These trucks are used for various applications from sewage and waste management to carrying brine water and contaminated soil from drilling sites.
Swab Rigs are primarily used in the removal of fluids from the ‘production zones’ of an oil well. These fluids are removed to access and extract the natural resource below. The machine on the truck is used to cause pressure in the well to allow the well to flow, making the resource accessible to the oilfield workers.
Types Of Oil Field Equipment
Apart from the trucks used in oilfields, there are many other types of equipment used, such as drilling equipment, production equipment, and workover equipment. These pieces of equipment include:
Drilling Rigs:
Drilling rigs are huge mechanical structures that are used to drill holes into the ground, creating boreholes or shafts. These massive structures are used to house equipment, used in drilling water wells, natural gas extraction wells, and oil wells. Drilling rigs can either be permanent land or offshore structures - commonly called oil rigs, or mounted on trucks trailers and tracks. These pieces of equipment are also used in the installation of subsurface fabrications like instrumentation, wells, underground utilities, and tunnels.
Solids control Equipment:
Solids control equipment includes a various pieces of equipment like degassers, sand pumps, mud gas separators, desanders, agitators, centrifuges, desilters, and so on.
Well Control Equipment:
Well Control Equipment includes BOP closing units, kill manifolds, shaffers, blowout preventers and choke manifolds.
Other Equipment:
Some other common types of equipment used in Oil Fields include mud pumps, drilling equipment, pipes, different types of valves, specialty hoses, storage tanks, and safety gear. The safety gear used by oilfield workers include safety goggles, harnesses, jackets, hats, shoes, helmets, gloves, fire suits, safety nets, and a range of other fire and safety equipment.
